Collie crosses, Sandy, Kerry and Max, form our family. We've had seven other dogs over the past 36 years, of which two, Pebbles and Holly, are featured here.

The dogs have persuaded me that my prime function in life is to take them out so that they can get muddy either by or in the canal.

Hello chaps,
Rat is definitely back (yeek!). We'd spotted him near the bath yesterday, and moved the hoover out of the way (again!) to try and grab him. Mum told us that our hearts were in the right place, so no telling off this time - yippee! We kept a close eye on Mum last night, and one or other of us escorted her to and from the bathroom just in case the rat decided to jump out on her. Mum said that we were v. brave, but that she might need to get the rodent operatives in(!)
She's off work this afternoon, and it's a beautiful day so we're about to go out for a long walk and swim. Leaving you a bacon buttie, Alfie and Dylan xxx

Hello chaps,
Us dogs had quite a weekend, Mum got home on Saturday and went absolutely crackers with us – to be fair to Mum, she’d had a frustrating day at the garage trying to get our dog-mobile sorted out. In the meantime we thought we’d smelt a rat under the bath, so we’d stripped the bathroom. Alfie had thoughtfully emptied the laundry basket (just in case rat had jumped in there), chewed and dropped a loo roll down the toilet, moved the vacuum cleaner from one side of the conservatory to the other, moved paint pots (that were meant to be out of hounds’ way) around (Dylan had attempted to open one of the pots too, but thankfully failed), had sat in the bath (presumably where the rat couldn’t get at him!) and left shampoo bottles and loofah scattered around the bath.
Dylan meanwhile had removed the tiles from the foot of the washbasin, and attempted to get the side off the bath too! Mum was furious, and the words “dog pound” were mentioned (this only happens when she’s very cross). Dogs sneaked off, although periodically a spaniel nose and whiskers would peep around the bathroom door while Mum was clearing up. Anyway order was eventually restored, and we spent the rest of the evening being very nice to her. On the good side, Mum thinks that with all the racket we made no sensible rat is going to want to come anywhere near the place (we’re having rat problems ever since D’s ex-Mum left, and left rubbish strewn everywhere).
On Sunday we went for a walk by the river, and Alfie was in a completely silly mood because it was windy. He managed to lose his Frisbee, and then decided to go for a swim in the drainage ditch. Mum called him and then spotted him swimming away – he must have swum for a mile, before he decided to get out. Then we got up on the riverbank, and A went for a swim still looking for his Frisbee. Mum lost sight of him, and couldn’t see him anywhere, he wasn’t in the river, he wasn’t on the bank, he wasn’t on the fen. Then Mum spotted Dylan looking rather quizzically across the river, and there was Alfie standing on the opposite bank. Alfie clearly expected Mum and Dylan to swim across and join him, but they were having none of it, so he had to perform a spectacular dive and swim across to join them. It’s a dog’s life. Leaving you some cheesey mash, Alfie and Dylan

Hi Max,
Mum went to the vets last night to collect Dylan's new eyedrops, and fell about laughing when she read the instructions - he has to avoid driving heavy machinery! Such a shame, as he was looking forward to getting his tractor out today, now Alfie will have to take over, and he's a rotten driver. Leaving you a jacket potato, Alfie and Dylan xxx

Hi Max,
We had an “interesting” walk on Monday. Wandered along the river bank and met 2 other dogs that we hadn’t met before. One of them, a large terrier, snapped at Alfie, who stayed well out of his way. Meanwhile little Dylan was wandering along the bank, chatting to the fishermen, smelling the flowers, and generally acting like his namesake, the hippie rabbit, from Magic Roundabout.
Large terrier saw Dills and had a rather nasty glint in his eye, marched up to the little chap, and snapped at him – little did he realize that under that gentle exterior lurks a Ninja! A quick snap, and some very rude language from Dills later, and the terrier exited extremely rapidly up the path, while Dills sauntered on completely unconcerned. He then spent a lot of time approaching Dylan, and assuring him that he wanted to be his bestist friend ever. Dills wasn’t impressed and kept his nose well stuck in the air! It was very funny, and just shows what a tough guy the little chap is, he didn’t spend time on the streets of Cambridgeshire for nothing…

Hello Max and mates,
Mum is thinking of installing dog-cam here, as there have been mysterious goings-on when she's out at work. She got back yesterday to find paw prints (Alfie's) in the bath, and the loofah had been moved from one end of the bath to the other. V. odd.
We'll probably not be on tomorrow as Mum has got to work late (never mind our secretarial needs!). Dylan's off to the vets on Saturday for his first check-up since the start of the year - keep your paws crossed for the little chap. Leaving you some pepperoni pizza, Alfie and Dylan xxx

Hi Max and pals,
Mum said that us two boys were very sweet last night. Dylan is still finding commands very hard to follow – most of the time “sit” remains a complete mystery to him, in spite of a range of training methods, and then last night … we think we had a bit of a breakthrough. Mum was trying to get Dylan to sit before his dinner, no luck, he looked at her trustingly and very confusedly, then she had a brainwave – whistled up Alfie, and told him to sit, which he did beautifully, then turned to Dylan and repeated the command – and he copied Alfie! Mum was thrilled and made a huge fuss of both. Alfie says that he was never told on his job description that he was expected to be a dog trainer too (although he’s very good at it). Leaving you a non-canine hot dog, Alfie and Dylan xx

Hi Max and pals,
Alfie was v. pleased to know that you're into the veg - he loves his fruit and veg, and says you're welcome anytime to find where she's hidden it. Glad to know that things seem to be going well at the vets, those yummy treats are evidently doing the trick! Dylan was v. impressed too, as an older dog, with your prowess with the ladies!
It's been wet and windy here today - we waited for a break in the rain and went for a walk, but it wasn't as long as we were hoping. Mum could barely breathe - the wind was so strong, Alfie was loopier than ever trying to chase his frisbee which was going all over the place - and Dylan generally stayed in Mum's slipstream otherwise he would have taken off! Alfie reckoned if we'd tied a balloon on him he'd probably have ended up in Moscow! The river that runs opposite our house, and where we usually take our walks was really high. The sluices must have been opened further up, it was a good foot higher than this time yesterday. A nearby town has had a severe flood warning, so it's a bit worrying, although I think we'll all be ok. At least the rain has stopped for now....Leaving you some raspberry yogurt, Alfie and Dylan xxx

Hi Max,
We had fun last night – it was so cold that when we went to bed, we both decided to cuddle up to Mum, so we had a Mum sandwich with a hound either side – only problem is she takes up so much room that we had to wriggle a lot so that she gave us a bit more space – it’s amazing what a paw in the stomach, or a cold wet nose run lightly down the neck will do especially if you do it at the same time – you should have heard her shriek!
We’re both fine – Alfie’s paw is much better, although he still has the odd chew – Mum doesn’t half shout if she catches him doing it, but it’s the only way to stop him. Dylan pulled the towel off the radiator last night and it landed on him! He ran off but had got it well and truly tangled round him – it did look funny seeing a towel racing across the kitchen with no sign of a dog. We’re looking forward to long walks this weekend, hoping that Alfie’s paw will stand up to it. Mum’s thinking of getting him a bed to go with Dylan’s – up to now he’s always slept on the old futon in the conservatory, but now prefers being next to his mate. Only problem is finding one that he won’t chew to pieces straightaway.
Leaving you some tasty fish and chips, Alfie and Dylan xxx

Hi Max,
Alfie’s paw is starting to feel better; it looks as though the sploshing with salted water and slathering with tea-tree ointment is doing the trick. He spent most of yesterday holding up the poorly paw for cuddles and sympathy. But when he did the same thing this morning Mum laughed at him – it was the wrong paw! As soon as he realized his mistake he switched to the sore one, but he had been rumbled… Both dogs now curled up on cosy beds with toys and treats, Mum had to face the sleet and snow to go to work, and they say it’s a dog’s life!
