Nothing else for it, this is going to be a GANG NEWSLETTER FROM CHAOS CORNER! Happy Spring??? Bank Holiday to all my readers. As I write it is Saturday night and I was speaking to my friend [one of the Jackies] who took the little Whippet X Lurcher, she went to a Game Fair today with her and ran her in the Whippet Racing.......... her very first effort, slow to understand where she was meant to go but then.........................whoosh........ finished 3rd and just getting going! Molly: Wonderful as ever, her phantom pregnancy is over but I noticed blood on a teat last Saturday, mastitis... more anti-biotics! She is actually coming in season, the boys are sniffing about and their teeth are chattering like mad; Molly soon sees them off though, it won’t be long until she is banished to a stable out of the reach of the marauding males! Horatio: Lovely dog, being very good and loving. Bert: Mindless as ever! He has a Molly Fixation, if we did not know otherwise we would say that he had been weaned much too early. He spends as much time as possible SUCKING Molly’s back, he goes into a trance of ecstasy pummeling her with his front paws......... but......... when she gets to the ‘interesting condition’ he suddenly grows up - real problems for him. This time it will be worse for him than ever as Molly’s substitute, the late-lamented FLOSS R.I.P. is no longer here to be his surrogate mother. Tallulah: Thinking about coming into season too, she is now missing her ‘partner’ Floss, maybe Annie will step into the breach, though I doubt it; Lu and Floss were an item for years. Alfred: The Teddy Bear of the family, a big kind, gentle dog who lives to follow my husband around [they go on holiday together!] Tig: The mobile hot-water bottle, he was getting depressed about the pups taking centre stage and we had to give him extra time in BED WITH US!!! He is much cheerier now, he has been assured he is still TOP DOG. Annie: Settling in very well, she had not put a paw wrong until this afternoon when she CHASED MY CAT! Death at dawn was threatened, I grabbed a broom handle and chased her with it, she cowered away, she was given the lightest tap with it, you would have thought by her expression that she had been thrashed within an inch of her life. She retreated to the kitchen and has avoided eye contact with me since! She is currently fast asleep in the puppy cage next to me. She continues to sleep with us, all goes well until she leaps up on TIG who is under the duvet, then there is a growling session from ‘The Master of the House’, Tig that is!!! We then re shuffle round the bed and with luck all is calm. One night Alfred arrived too and landed on them both! I evicted him altogether so he trundled down to a visitor’s room and joined her - opportunist! Annie plays with a tug, she takes it and prods various noses asking to play, so far the only one to take up the challenge was Little Ruairi who was quickly defeated. She tears round the garden and field [just had slurry sprayed........................] she seems very happy. Ruairi: Is getting bolder, he has turned on Annie a couple of times when she took his tuggie, I don’t know who was the more surprised! Caíomhe: Is not feeling very well, this morning she had the violent gut-rot, fortunately the pups were in the cage and so it was not too drastic, the thought of that lot on the kitchen floor............ poor little girl, she is really off colour today. General News: The pups and Annie went to visit Elaine-the-Dog Warden to get their licences and be microchipped. Here in Northern Ireland we have DOG LICENCES! It costs £5 per dog and there are no exemptions. One can have a reduced fee for an OAP, but there are no block licences unless one has certified breeding kennels Ministry inspected. I believe that the reason there are so many dogs destroyed here is that if a dog strays and it is not wearing a collar and a current licence disc the owner is liable to a hefty fine or if any damage has been incurred, prosecution. Therefore, dogs are abandoned rather than being claimed, it is the efficiency of the system here. Ah well, Better get on here, time to feed everybody. Best Wishes to you all, here’s hoping your dogs stay healthy and happy and so do you! Lynda.

Hello Friends in Broadsland! Thought that you might like to get the latest news from Chaos Corner.................. Annie’s story as far as it is known. This is rather a convoluted story! It starts back on a cold January lunchtime when I was very busy preparing food for a dinner party that night; the ‘phone rang and it was Elaine, our local dog warden, she was coming that evening. She said that she knew that it was customary to bring a small gift for the hostess......... I asked ‘ What is the dog like?’ Of course I was correct, she dropped me over a 5 month Brindle Whippet X Whippet cross Collie? Filthy and terrified although in fairly good condition. The story with her: ‘Pippa’, was that she had been one of a litter found in the river, on the riverbank at a few weeks old. Elaine and helpers rescued and re-homed them all. Unfortunately it obviously did not work out and the pup was left with another relative who already had a dog and did not want another. However, at least she did the right thing and returned her to Elaine. Well, I was trying to organize FOOD! Pippa was put in a stable with warm milk, food, large basket and duvet. Amongst other guests were ‘The Jackies’: they are friends with Agility dogs, Collies and Labradors [one of the latter went to Crufts some years ago and was the highest placed non-Collie, BEN]. I had viewed a litter of Whippets with the Female Jackie, but she wanted a BRINDLE BITCH to train for Agility........Ah-Ha you see where this is going, Pippa became Heidi-Hi and is doing brilliantly; she is unrecognizable from the poor cowering pup I saw in January. Jackie asked me why did I give Pippa to her, I answered that I knew she was exactly what she was looking for and that my rough-haired Lurcher would turn up sometime. On Sunday 13th. April ‘The Jackies’ were walking on the beach when they met another ‘Heidi’, a greyhound belonging to a man who assists with a re-homing service here in N Ireland. He is involved in the selection of dogs, particularly Lurchers and Greyhounds to go over to The Dog’s Trust at Stoneleigh. He mentioned that they had 2 rough-coated Lurchers ‘for the boat’, dog and bitch. My telephone number was passed on.................. I went to see her on the following Tuesday, she was in a temporary foster home with ’Barbara’. I saw ‘Shirley’, a scruffy golden rough-coated Whippet x Wheaten or Border Terrier, not pretty but needing a home. She had been found wandering and lost at Christmas time, very thin and cold. She was taken to the USPCA where she was named ‘Shirley’ by one of the staff. Subsequently she was taken by her ’proper’ foster mother, Wendy, who nursed her back to health, although she is still very thin. I said ‘Yes’, The little dog had already jumped in the jeep with me! She was returned to Wendy [who had had to relinquish her as one of her other dogs started to cough.........], she was spayed, made an excellent recovery and was delivered by Wendy and her friend Trisha on Tuesday 23rd. She had quite a reception, The Jackies came bearing a Teddy Bear for her and a celebration chocolate cake, my sister arrived from England and we all had lunch - a typical scene of Bedlam! In the afternoon we had the Collies and Labs [who are very obedient] and Heidi-Hi [who is improving dramatically] along with ’Shirley’ [who is now re-named ‘Annie’ -Little Orphan Annie, that is, as one of my best friends is Shirley and there would have been too much confusion!] tearing around the front garden with sticks, Chukka-Ball and balls. Annie doesn’t know how, or want to, retrieve a ball or anything else! We gradually introduced her to our 8 as well. One would think she had been here weeks! As I type she is lying in a basket at my feet, 2 pups and Tig are on the sofa with my husband, Horatio is on my other side, Tallulah is under a small table in an extra basket, Molly is lying behind me, Bert is precariously perched on the back of the sofa propped up by my husband’s head! Alfred has wandered off into the dining room to lie in one of the chairs! Who says it’s a dog’s life? Annie is getting 4 meals a day, the vet has given me a tonic for her, she sleeps on our bed along with either Tig or Alfred [they take turns] and Molly who is so huge she has her basket next to me. As soon as I move Annie is with me, she is very happy in the Jeep, although she is small enough to have managed to navigate her way over the dog grid [first one to manage that feat!] Annie is terrified of the horses and barks like mad, I have grabbed her and held her in my arms but she is clearly very unhappy - she may get used to them!!! She met the cat on the kitchen step and I held my breath, Lurchers are not known for their devotion to small furry animals.......... all well, Mouser held her ground. Well, that’s the story to date, no doubt there will be many incidents to relate over the next few weeks. Meanwhile my wonderful husband likes her but says ‘No more Dogs’, I’ve heard that one before!!!!!
