Hi Anita, how are you? Getting older has simply nothing to recommend it, I realised that this morning when I was looking for my glasses. I knew that, being as blind as the proverbial bat, I had absolutely no hope of finding them unless I was actually wearing them, if you SEE what I mean. And I will not mention the senile moments which seem to come now with increasing frequency - did I shut the door? which door? why did I go upstairs? what was that I said I wouldn't forget? And the worrying thing is that I still have the male menopause to come!!!! Anyway, at least the doggies are all flourishing, the girlie gundogs spark each other off and seem to be in a permanent state of puppydom and it is wonderful and long may it last. And although Dobes is obviously beginning to feel his age and is sleeping most of the time, he remains a happy little chap. And none of them have to wear spectacles, the lucky sods. Today the threesome are delivering a bird's feather found by Purdey on our walk, a hair tie (Sarika's favourite toy, she loves it put on her nose) and a duvet (slightly used) from Max...oh yes, and an empty spectacle case. Have fun x
THE JOYS OF DOG OWNERSHIP....CHAPTER 4. ("Ahs" not "Urghs"). DOBERDOG. Max has given up barking, instead he is quite clearly saying "Rolf". He has always been quite articulate, once when he was begging at the dining table I told him that he could have some ham if he could say "gammon". Ten minutes later he said "gammon". He hasn't worked out however that it doesn't work if we are eating fish, steak, shepherds pie etc. He also has yet to manage to say "pease pudding"! Anyway Rolf. I am uncertain as to whether he is calling for Rolf Harris to put him on a pet programme or, alternatively, he has a friend called Rolf, in this life or a previous one. Advice wanted. THE GIRLS. They were asleep in the sitting room, Sarika on the sofa, Purdey on the floor. Purdey was having something of a nightmare judging by the squeaky barking and whimpering. This was getting louder and more frequent. As I went to her Sarika overtook me and started to gently lick her face, clearly comforting her. It was one of those wonderful moments and I nearly cried. ME On the phone late last night with work people in the USA, the dogs were in bed. I went to the loo for a pee on my way to bed. Thought I wouldn't flush because I did not want to disturb the dogs. DID NOT WANT TO DISTURB THE DOGS! What is that all about? I think that they have finally taken complete control of my life. And do you know something? I really don't mind. TREATS. Relevant today. First a Didgeridoo (just in case it is THAT Rolf and he turns up), then a mug of Horlicks (gives untroubled sleep apparently) and finally a loo with a silent flush (just in case it is Number 2s next time!!!). Have fun x
THE JOYS OF DOG OWNERSHIP....CHAPTER 37. What is it about me and dog poo? If I pick up a poo covered stick it is always the wrong end, if I throw away a clearing up stick after use Sarika brings it back, wiping the wrong end on my trousers. It seems to follow me around whatever I do. Perhaps, like Purdey, I should confont it head on and roll in it? On the other hand, perhaps not. Yesterday the girls were in the garden - currently not under water, HOORAY. One of them did a poo - I will not say which one because she, being a princess, is normally above such things. So I got a nappy sack out of my pocket - do you know that, whatever I am wearing, I always have nappy sacks in a pocket, even my dressing gown. What is that all about? Anyway, I digress - I got the nappy sack and a shovel and put the poo into the sack...........It is difficult to remember exactly when I noticed that the nappy sack had a large hole in it. I really cannot remember whether it was before or after I noticed that a load of dog poo had gone straight through the nappy sack and had landed on my sock and slipper. Sadly they were both on my foot at the time!......I did not know that I knew some of the words that came out of my mouth at that moment. I do not normally drink alcohol before the evening, yesterday I made an exception by several hours. In sympathy with my plight and still working on "be prepared" the girls and doberdog are today sending over a clean pair of socks and some washing powder and, practical as always, a cork. Hmmmmm. I will leave you to work out what to do with the cork but will give you a couple of clues....a) dog and b) its bottom. Have fun x
THE JOYS OF DOG OWNERSHIP....CHAPTER 135. Purdey, the hairy gundog - grey version - was spayed two weeks ago today. As usual, after such an operation, she was allowed restricted exercise and had to kept on the lead. She had her second post-op review late last week. She was passed 100% fit and "ready to run". Took her home from the vets, got changed and out for a walk. Off to the fields and let her off the lead. WOW. I did not know she could run that fast. My amusement at her obvious joy to be free quickly turned to dismay when she spotted what I can only assume was the Eighth Wonder of The World - a pile of deer poo so high that I imagine that the deer responsible was thirty foot tall! She rolled in it, not once, not twice BUT three times. I got her back and attached the lead to her collar which was filthy. I then walked the very smelly hairy gundog (previously grey) home, hoping not to meet anyone I knew on the way. A considerable time was then spent with shampoo and tomato sauce, cleaning and de-smelling the little xxx. I was tempted to write an advertisement for the local newspaper "dogs for sale" columns but decided to pour a large glass of wine instead. Half way througfh the second I began to feel quite mellow!..........Today's treat from Sarika (who, being a princess, is above that sort of thing) and Max (who is too old for all that messing around) and my Bambi equivalent is some shampoo and, of course, a bottle of tomato sauce...best to be prepared! Have fun.
Hope you've had a good weekend my friend? Only had a little rain here, we were lucky. Sending you some lamb, roast potatoes and vegetables. Hope you like it. Love Alfie xox
Hi. In a rush this morning as currently involved in a frog hunt. For some unknown reason I have an inundation of baby (less than an inch long) frogs in the garden. I have no idea from where they have come or to where they are going. Collecting them (36 so far) seems a better idea than letting the dogs scoff them! Today's treat from the girls and doberdog is reptilian in nature - alligator steak, salad and, bizarrely, a jug of chilli chocolate sauce, apparently it goes well! Enjoy. PS Brainy daughter's arm is a lot better: still no sign of Rodney the snail, recall was never his strong point!
Hi Anita. Have just returned from my early morning walk with Rodney the snail. A lot of time, a lot of slime but not much distance. I shall have to have a word with Sarika about the company she keeps!. After all the wonderful food previously delivered I have absolutely no idea what is in today's treat, it is a canine concoction. That is the trouble with leaving three dogs in the kitchen. However they are keenly licking the bowl so it must be yummy. Enjoy. PS My medication obviously hasn't kicked in yet!!!!

Hi Anita. After all the excitement of the weekend it is a quiet day today. So we will concentrate on the food. Today's treat starter is courgette soup with garlic and blue cheese. The main course is salmon en croute and for pudd, the classic lemon meringue pie. Enjoy. Oh yes, and for the humans......our world champion (unofficial) Sarika has just brought in a snail. I suppose they could either eat it or keep it as a pet. It answers to the name Rodney. PS If anyone has a clue what I am going on about then perhaps they could let my doctor know!

Hi Anita. SHOCK - HORROR - SENSATION. The girls and doberdog are in the garden. A little while ago when Sarika was windsurfing, Purdey was water skiing and Max swimming (with paw bands on!) they all looked up. I followed their gaze and there was this large yellow object hanging in the sky. I rang the police in case it was a spaceship. I then rang the Met Office. They said it was something called "THE SUN". Goodness me. THE SUN. In celebration of this rare event today's treats are the remains of Sunday's roast (beef and roast potatoes) and of course some sun tan lotion. I wanted to add a Sonny and Cher CD too but it is spelt wrong so nevermind. Have fun, or even have sun!

Hi Anita. Well that was a great weekend wasn't it? Being the middle of winter (well, June!) it was back to one hour of dog walking followed by two hours of dog washing, working from photographs in an effort to restore the girls to something approaching their former glory. Who was the twit who thought having hairy gundogs was a good idea? Todays treats are relevant -there is an inflatable boat, a Wet Wet Wet album and a packet of water biscuits. Have fun. PS And by the way, I have remembered the answer to my question.........ME!

Hi Anita. Did not get on DoggySnaps yesterday as I had to go to a family funeral. Arrived home late, tired and feeling thoroughly miserable. Opened the kitchen door and there, before all the mad welcomes began, was this wonderful scene. Purdey and Sarika were playing tug of war with Max's bed. And Max? Max was sitting in the bed, almost like some mad boat captain. It was one of those "where is my camera" moments and it made me laugh. Thank goodness for my crazy canines. No exotic foods for today's treat, we will get back to them next week, simply us lot wishing you and yours a happy weekend.
